On Oct. 9, 1996, Jeffrey Maier reached over the outfield wall of Yankee Stadium and nabbed a deep Derek Jeter fly, saving it from the grasp of Orioles right-fielder Tony Tarasco. After years of being lauded by Yankees fans and threatened by all along the Beltway, Maier matriculated at Wesleyan, where he graduated with the team record for career hits after batting .403 as a senior. But after speculation in The New York Times that the Orioles, of all teams, might nab him, Maier went undrafted.
