Smoot Expects to Be Full-Go In Practice

Cornerback Fred Smoot, a surprise inactive for Monday night's game due to a hamstring injury, said he expects to return to practice this week.

"I'll be practicing," he said. "I'm good now. Hopefully, the little rest helped me [get healthy] and I won't hurt it again. I've never pulled a hamstring before, so it was kind of new to me."

Smoot was limited in practices leading up to the Philadelphia game.

He had hoped to play in Monday night's game. He jogged on the field prior to the game in the hopes of convincing coaches he was ready.

"But [assistant head coach-defense] Gregg Williams said, 'No,' so I didn't play," Smoot said.

Shawn Springs and Carlos Rogers started at cornerback, with backups David Macklin and Leigh Torrence also seeing action. Springs left the game in the fourth quarter due to cramps.

Head coach Joe Gibbs has emphasized that the team views Springs, Rogers and Smoot as prospective starters for the defense.

"We feel like we're real solid there at corner," Gibbs said. "We have three guys there who have started a bunch. We feel like we have three starters there."

Meantime, Smoot is looking forward to returning to action in this Sunday's game against the New York Giants at FedExField.

He expects the winless Giants to give the Redskins a tough battle.

"I think they're trying to find themselves right now and they want to get a win against us," Smoot said. "They will bring their ?A' game against us. Believe me, it's going to be a [tough game]."
