SPORTING NEWS MOCK DRAFT: ROUND 1

(1) Rams Glenn Dorsey DT LSU
Rams officials would prefer to trade down out of this top spot because they'd prefer to take an offensive tackle in the first round. If stuck at No. 1, the likely would go with Dorsey to team with last year's first-round pick, DT Adam Carriker

(2) Dolphins Chris Long DE Va.
The Dolphins' defensive stars obviously are getting old, and Long would give them a versatile lineman who can play both end and tackle

(3) Jets Quentin Groves DE Auburn
Jets officials also would think about taking Arkansas RB Darren McFadden here, but the team just spent big money to lock up Thomas Jones. Instead, the team should take an edge rusher for its 3-4.

(4) Patriots Malcolm Jenkins CB Ohio St. (from San Francisco)
The Patriots already have a lot of talent, but Jenkins would give them a young corner with tons of athleticism who could replace Asante Samuel if he departs via free agency.

(5) Bengals Darren McFadden RB Arkansas
Bengals official are sure consider upgrading their defense with Southern Cal OLB Keith Rivers, but Rudi Johnson is getting old and the chance to draft a franchise back would be tough to pass on, especially in light of Adrian Peterson's success as a rookie in Minnesota.

(6) Falcons Brian Brohm QB Louisville
Some NFL teams have Boston College's Matt Ryan rated ahead of Brohm, but we like Brohm best and coach Bobby Petrino certainly knows first hand that Brohm can run his offense.

(7) Raiders King Dunlap T Auburn
Raiders owner/GM Al Davis will think long and hard about taking TCU DE Tommy Blake but should opt for the massive Dunlap to enhance the offensive line.

(8) Cardinals Keith Rivers OLB USC
Cardinals GM Rod Graves must add speed to defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast's system. Rivers is a linebacker with the speed to make plays sideline-to-sideline.

(9) Vikings Ryan Clady T Boise St.
The Vikings' offensive line has struggled in recent seasons, and LT Bryant McKinnie has failed to live up to expectations. Clady is a top-flight lineman who would give the team flexibility.

(10) Broncos Early Doucet WR LSU
Despite defensive struggles this season, coach/GM Mike Shanahan should not pass on an elite receiver to pair with Javon Walker immediately and Brandon Marshall down the road.

(11) Bears Matt Ryan QB Boston Coll.
Bears GM Jerry Angelo would consider Kentucky's Andre' Woodson and Ryan at this spot, but Ryan is more polished than the freakishly talented Woodson.

(12) Eagles Kenny Phillips S Miami (FL)
Eagles officials really wanted safety Brandon Meriweather in '07 Draft, but New England grabbed him. The team probably wouldn't pass on the chance to draft his college teammate to shore up the secondary.

(13) Texans Mike Jenkins CB South Fla.
The Texans lost top-flight cornerback Dunta Robinson to a torn ACL last week, and he really was the only big-time player in the secondary anyhow. Even if able to return 100 percent next year, the team would need help at all the other spots.

(14) Seahawks Ray Rice RB Rutgers
RB Shaun Alexander is having a very disappointing season, and there are whispers that he never again will be an elite back. Seahawks GM Tim Ruskell would be wise to start shopping for Alexander's successor.

(15) Saints Frank Okam DT Texas
The Saints' interior defensive line consistently struggles to make impact plays, and Okam could become a special player

(16) Ravens Tommy Blake DE TCU
Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome has a history of being willing to gamble on players with some issues, and Blake is an elite talent who would be worth the risk.

(17) Chiefs Andre' Woodson QB Kentucky
The Chiefs gave second-year QB Brodie Croyle the job, but he lost it to journeyman Damon Huard in training camp and obviously is not the Chiefs' long-term answer. GM Carl Peterson has a history of taking big-name players, and Woodson would give the team a top talent to develop.

(18) Bills DeJuan Tribble CB Boston Coll.
After losing CB Nate Clements in free agency last offseason, the Bills should target the athletic Tribble.

(19) Panthers Rey Maualuga ILB USC
MLB Dan Morgan almost never is healthy. The Panthers should grab Maualuga to patrol the middle and allow Jon Beason, the '07 first-round pick, to move back outside.

(20) Chargers Tony Hills T Texas
The Chargers already have a great left tackle in Marcus McNeill, but the right side is a concern. Hills is very athletic and would shore up the line.

(21) Buccaneers Colt Brennan QB Hawaii
QB Jeff Garcia is having a strong season but turns 38 on Feb. 24. The Bucs need a quarterback for the future, and Brennan is a special talent.

(22) Cowboys DeSean Jackson WR Cal (from Cleveland)
Both Terrell Owens and Terry Glenn are getting up there in years, so the team should add an elite young receiver to the mix.

(23) Jaguars Andre Caldwell WR Florida
No receiver has stepped up to become the Jaguars' go-to guy. Sure, the Jaguars have wasted a lot of high draft picks at wide receiver, but like the Lions should keep trying until they get it right. The quick and elusive Caldwell would give QB David Garrard the No. 1 target he desperately needs.

(24) Redskins Lawrence Jackson DE USC
The Redskins, although improved, still need pass rushers. Jackson shows the technique to become a solid, if unspectacular, force.

(25) Steelers Antoine Cason CB Arizona
Steelers officials would consider an offensive lineman at this spot but should first address their inconsistent cornerback situation. Cason also is versatile enough to play safety alongside Troy Polamalu.

(26) Titans Adarius Bowman WR Oklahoma St.
The Titans should grab the big, strong Bowman to give Vince Young a strong possession receiver to be a force in the red zone.

(27) Giants Sedrick Ellis DT USC
The Giants have struggled to find a consistent force at defensive tackle. Despite lacking ideal size, Ellis is athletic and makes big plays.

(28) Lions Michael Oher T Ole Miss
The Lions' offensive line could use some help. The super athletic but raw Oher would give the team a franchise talent at tackle.

(29) Packers Jake Long T Michigan
The Packers' rushing attack has been wildly inconsistent in '07, and most of the problems can be traced to a lack of elite talent along the offensive line. Long could step in immediately at right tackle or guard.

(30) 49ers Sam Baker T USC (from Indianapolis)
The Niners' line has struggled greatly in recent seasons, and Baker would give them a tackle to pair with last year's first-round pick, Joe Staley. It would allow the team to trade underachiever Jonas Jennings.

(31) Cowboys Terrell Thomas CB USC
Terence Newman is a good corner on one side, but the other side has been inconsistent. Thomas is a big, strong cornerback who could develop opposite Newman.

eh, even if San Fran finishes in the Top 5, you can bet your life that the Patriots will try and trade out of that pick- just cause they can. Either way, (as a complete homer) I would like to see them draft CB Aqib Talib from Kansas (assuming he leaves). Honestly, a 6'2" corner that is an effective offensive weapon as well? Why not?

OT is a bigger need than ILB for the panthers so would rather tony hills. plus he perfectly fits our system
