Just as the Steelers welcome the possible return of safety Troy Polamalu this week, it appears they have lost the services of defensive end Aaron Smith. Smith's right shoulder was injured in Detroit Sunday and coach Mike Tomlin said today it "potentially could be significant." Tomlin said the injury potentially could keep Smith out for awhile, pending the result of tests today.

This is freaking terrible, when we lost Aaron Smith 2 seasons ago our run defense was TERRIBLE. This is not good at all.

Hopefully it's smoke and Ziggy can step in and at least be a decent stop gap. Man. I'll see if I can dig up any info on the severity from my insiders board.

Ziggy will be fine in pass rushing situations, no way he fill the gaps like Aaron Smith, Maybe he can step up to the challenge man I freaking hope so. I still have high hopes for this season, and this hurts.

Smith to be out for at least three months. Going in for surgery on his right rotator cuff for Friday. Do we IR him if he can be back in time for Playoff football assuming we make the cut?

Ziggy's not going to replace Aaron Smith...no one is. He's one of the last people I'd want to lose on this team...

They will probably see how the defense looks against the Vikings to make that call.

I'm just thinking back to 2007 when we lost him, Everyone easily ran on us. Ziggy Hood maybe can do just enough to prevent that. If not we have to bring in someone, we can't just throw this season away because of this injury. Thank God the offense is scoring more, right?

    **********Automerged Doublepost**********

Trade Willie Parker for a solid 3-4 defensive end? lol

I just listened to Tomlin's press conference, he said it will be a group of bodies trying to replace smith, that being Ziggy Hood, Travis Kirschke and Nick Eason. Hopefully with the rotation they can bring a spark, yes its wishful thinking.

    Come on Ziggy...lol...

    pffft...I'm not...

Kirschke is a decent player but like I said, Smith is irreplaceable...I seriously wouldn't mind if they traded Sweed for a 3-4 DE...

We know which side teams will be running to, this puts added pressure on Woodley and Timmons to help contain the run on that side. Tomlin will get these boys fired up to fill the gap, meanwhile Adrian Peterson is licking his chops.

adrian peterson has a chance to break the single game rushing record....loadholt will have a field day with the left side of our dline.

good thing our offense is going ape crap lately, if it wasnt we just went from being a playoff team to a top 15 pick

Reading that if Smith hits the IR, they could make a push to sign Sunny Harris.
