Were you given massive quantities of money to sign a piece of paper? Otherwise known as a signing bonus?

That's the difference. Owners pay massive amounts upfront with the expectation that the player 1. survives to play out his contract and 2. actually plays for the amount agreed upon. The amount agreed upon that the player cemented by cashing that big butt check simply for his John Hancock.

    That's how it's different.

For every DeSean Jackson or Lance Briggs, there are five other players who were signed to extensions or were draft busts whom the owners did not get proper returns on their investment.

I dont put Briggs and Jackon in the same category. Briggs already snitched and got a new contract. Now hes making a habit of it.

How about owners who release players that are under contract. Look at Garrard

You speak the truth, a lot of these people are talking like they would not do the same thing. The eagles payed everyone else except there best weapon. That's a slap in the face to this guy. He needs to get his money.

so what, just like the people snitching that players should invest their money better so should the teams. its the risk the teams take. draft better.

look, this thread has gone so far off in left field it comical. bottom line is jackson sat out one week. one freaking week because he is grossly underpaid and going into the LAST YEAR OF HIS CURRENT DEAL. this is not a guy like briggs, owens, osi or any other dipcrap who is snitching like a girl one or two years into a giant deal so anyone who compares him to those players is stupid.

the eagles never let a good player go this far without re-signing them. banner has pretty much stated they hecked this up. so the debate ends there. the eagles screwed up some on what they thought they would have money wise under the cap. again something banner admitted. so the team didnt say no.

And if he plays hard, performs well, and doesn't listen to idiots like TO and others posting in this thread.....he will be.....but as long as he has a contract then he has a job to do.

He made $25 million dollars in three years. And was given $9,000,000 upfront as a signing bonus where the Jags hoped he would perform up to the contract and play out his full six year extension.

David Garrard Contract, Salaries, and Transactions

They felt he didn't live up to his contract, so they stopped paying him halfway through his contract. Are they going to ask for half of that $9,000,000 back? Oh heavens no, that would be some bullcrap.

Players get the signing bonus and 'guaranteed money'.
Owners get the ability to cut you if you aren't seen as worth your contract.

Just go out onto the field, play out your contract that you agreed to and have fun on the free agency market. Unfortunately, the final year of contracts has become the "pay me or I'll sit out" year. For these players, and especially their agents, heck 'em all. Maybe Karlos Dansby of the Dolphins can school these "outplayed their contracts" rodheads. Dansby was without doubt the central figure in the AZ Cards' defense and he just kept his mouth shut while the dumbass Cards franchise tagged his butt for two years and he never said a word. Then free agency hit and cha-ching. The Dolphins AND Dansby signed a deal they both think is fair....just like every other freaking contract.
If players were so confident in their abilities they'd play out the deal that they thought was fair on signing day and hit free agency for the big payday.
Screw T.O. and his sound advice.

No, it's not. But whenever someone opines that contracts should not or do knot have to be adhered to, then I will always be the fool that thinks contracts have meaning.
