Texans running back Ron Dayne takes pride in being on call each time the Texans reach the red zone. He loves being inches away from the end zone with the potential to change the outcome of a game on a single short run.

Dayne wishes he could have done that Saturday in the team's first preseason game against the Bears. He was given three attempts with the second-team offense to punch the ball into the end zone from inside Chicago's 4-yard line and couldn't do it.

"Ah, man, I think I should have got it, but there were so many black jerseys," said Dayne, who finished with four carries for six yards. "I think I should have gotten it, though. I'm going to keep fighting and get better. That was our first one. So hopefully I can get better and get stronger down there."

The Texans finished the game 1-for-4 inside the red zone. Their only successful penetration came in the third quarter when Sage Rosenfels threw a short pass to tight end Jeb Putzier for a 6-yard touchdown.
