It does suck that a Yankee threw it. There should be an asterisk next to it since it was against the A's.
A Yankee and a guy suspended for domestic violence and suspended again for sticky stuff. If they can keep the steroid users out of the HOF for cheating, this perfect game shouldn't count either, by the same logic.
Just when I think I'm out, they suck me back in...after dropping a series to the Nationals, they won a series against the Rays, only the best team in baseball. They were losing 6-1 yesterday and came back to win it 6-7. Just when I thought I was out, I'm watching tonight against the Giants. God help me...
So...trade deadline...here's my list of untouchable Mariners because they're part of the young core and the team still has control on them for the next 4-5 years (or more in one case): Julio Rodriguez (OF) Jarred Kelenic (OF) George Kirby (SP) Cal Raleigh (C) Andres Muñoz (RP) Untradeable because contract and/or injuries Luis Castillo (SP) (Just signed a long-term extension in a season that already saw him fall from ace of the rotation to number 2 or 3). Robbie Ray (SP) (Will miss two years of his 5-year 105 million deal because TJ. F**K ME) Eugenio Suarez (3B) (Has lost power, speed, defense...might not even finish the season as starter and he makes like 12 million) That leaves our best tradeable asset as Logan Gilbert (pitcher) and I would hate it to see him go. I think I've grown too attached to these players as I've been following them since they were prospects. JP Crawford (SS) might be untouchable too as he's been named captain and he's the absolute leader in the locker room... I mean, clubhouse. Ty France (1B) still has value? I don't know...I'd hate it to see him go too. Teo Hernandez arrived this year and has delivered as expected...but hasn't signed an extension yet and becomes a FA after the season...maybe we can get someone for him? Maybe just stay put and try again next year. I swear this team is good...it's been just unlucky sometimes this year. I hope they don't do something stupid...
Shohei Ohtani said something nice about Seattle and now Mariners Twitter is in a full frenzy, expecting him to sign with us in the winter. They forget we have the less rich and probably cheapest owner in baseball who spent the enormous sum of (checks notes) 1.5 million dollars in free agency last winter. Yeah...it's never going to happen, but it's ok to dream, I guess. Ohtani seems like a very nice guy, he would've probably said something nice about Tijuana if asked about it. It's in times like this when I wish we had a Jerry Jones like owner in baseball. It's fascinating to me to imagine what Jerry would do without the limitations of a salary cap, if he was free to spend whatever he wanted while owning the most valuable sports franchise in the world. We have a saying here: "God doesn't give wings to scorpions" and I think it applies perfectly. Second half coming up!! Let's see if they can make a run at this thing...
Jarred Kelenic broke his foot last night and he's probably out for the rest of the season. That's it. It's over. I'm ready for training camp now!!
I'm really torn on this one. Kelenic spoke to the media yesterday before the game and couldn't contain the tears and the frustration of "letting his teammates down". I mean...I love the attitude and the accountability and the fact that he didn't hid in the trainers room and faced the media. I don't love the lack of control of his emotions. I hope he gets the help he needs because he's a hell of a player and we're going nowhere without him in '24. Kid is just 24. We all do stupid s**t at that age. I broke a hand at 23 hitting a f**king tree while drunk...I get it. I just hope he manages to channel that into a more positive action.
Who decided wins are a pitcher stat? You can give up 2 runs in 8 innings and get the loss (usually if you pitch for the Mariners). You can also give up 8 runs in 5 innings and get a win. Makes no sense to me. Felix Hernandez won a Cy Young with a 11-12 record...it should have stopped right there but they still keep track...
M's are 4 games over .500 for the first time all season, and just 3.5 back in the wild card and 5 back in the division. Just when I think I'm out, they suck me back in!! Yesterday we traded our closer, Paul Sewald for a bunch of players I had never heard of before so...nice, I guess...hope they can help. Trade deadline is today and word says they're not done dealing yet. Teo Hernandez and Ty France seem to be on the bubble. As long as they don't trade any more pitchers, I'm fine with it...funny, because that's our strength XD.
Verlander is coming back to Houston and I remembered that time in the playoffs when we scored like 6 runs on him and still lost... (And spend 18 innings the following day not scoring a single run...baseball is weird, man).
We had a little glimpse of CHAOS BALL yesterday. Julio stole home, a couple of broken bat hits...team is starting to catch breaks!! Finally!! We've won 7 straight series...none of them have bee sweeps, all 2-1...but it's something!! Just 3 games back in the wild card and 5 back in the division. Maybe I pronounced them dead too soon...
Shohei Ohtani pitched 4 scoreless innings, struck out 4, went 2 for 4, stole a base, and hit his 40th home run of the year and the Angels lost 5-3 to the Mariners on rookie Cade Marlowe's first career grand slam in the ninth inning. Good ol' Tungsten Arm O'Doyle... Free Ohtani. Get him out of there...
I watched the highlights. Great win for your Mariners. Ohtani 100% looked like he was about to start crying. I'd like to see him get out of there too but my fear is that he will end up a Yankee, Dodger or Met. I would hate that for me.
He'll probably remain in the west coast, as it's closer to Japan. Dodgers and Giants seem to be the favorites with the M's and Padres as "dark horses". How the Mariners ownership will go after him, I have no idea...but everybody keeps saying so...
The Mariners traded their closer away and have not lost a game since. The bullpen has been lights out, and we just debuted the 5th starter this year. Emerson Hancock, first round pick from 2021, threw a solid 5 innings and the M's won their seventh in a row... Baseball is fun again...
On the night Felix Hernandez was inducted into the Mariners hall of fame and had his number retired, the M's starter, George Kirby, threw 9 scoreless innings, allowed only 2 hits, struck out 10...and well, I don't need to tell you how it went, do I? M's lost 0-1 in the 10th inning. I can't believe this keeps happening. Felix has now been 2 times in the stadium since he retired, he has watched 28 innings of baseball, and the Mariners have not scored A SINGLE TIME. Just like when he pitched. We're entering serious voodoo territory here, boys. It just doesn't make sense...
Last night we were getting perfecto'd through the fifth, then no-no'd in the seventh, came back from 5 runs down to lead 6-5 in the ninth, and LOST on a suicide squeeze in the bottom of the 9th. Baseball is so random and chaotic, I love it!!...but when it doesn't go your way it can break your heart. Can't wait to do it again tonight...
Julio Rodriguez became the first player since 1925 to have 4 straight 4-hit games, and the Mariners swept the Astros (reverse Tungsten arm O'Doyle!!!) to finally take posession of the last wild card spot in the AL, and cut the deficit to 3 games to the Rangers in the AL West. Amazing. Our next 12 games are against the Royals, White Sox and Athletics. We could take the division in a couple of weeks and I'm sorry but this is unbelieavable. I will never leave a baseball team for dead before July 31st again.
