By the way, Arozarena's story of how he became a Mexican citizen is fascinating. Knowing he might not make it to Florida during the Trump administration, he sailed to Mexico instead. He joined a Mexican league team, caught the eye of MLB scouts who helped him get his visa and all that. He became a star, and he wanted to play in the world baseball classic but as he defected from Cuba, they wouldn't allow him on the team. That's where President Lopez, a huge baseball fan, intervened and he got fast tracked for citizenship on the basis that his daughter was born here, from a mexican mother, and it got done just in time for the tournament. The rest his history...we made it to the semifinals and came this close to beating Japan. Ohtani walked us off in the ninth...only because Andres Muñoz wasn't available to close the game due to injury.
As mentioned above, Ty France was DFA'd last week and today he was traded to the Reds for a minor league catcher. One of my favorite Mariners of the past couple of years, key piece of the 2022 team that ended the drought. Can't wait to see him get his mojo back and hit for .350 in Cincinnati.
I can't believe we won the Phillies series. And I really, for the life of me, cannot believe they came back from a 5-0 deficit in game 2. Usually when the other team scores 3 runs on us, it's over. But the deadline aquisitions have proven to be the catalyst for the awakening of this offense. I only regret I missed it because I turned the game off at that point thinking it was over. The best part was both M's fans and Phillies fans in the bleachers chanting "F*CK THE ASTROS". Maybe it's hope for humanity after all.
Game 2 was perhaps the Phillies worst loss of the season. Unreal that Hoffman gave up 4 runs. His ERA for the year was under 1 going into the game. Even with the team struggling like have been, he was always reliable. Hopefully yesterday turned the tide back around though.
Mariners salvaged a game against the Tigers last night to avoid another sweep. Down to their last out, their last strike, down by 2 runs, Mitch Haniger walked it of with a bases clearing double. At no point during the 27 previous innings the Mariners held a lead. Baseball is so awesome and weird... Now we open a series against the Mets, and as they're rivals of the Phillies, we'll take it seriously and score before the 9th inning.
Go Mariners!!! Mets slid past the Braves into 2nd place in the NL East. Can't believe how badly Atlanta is struggling. I love it but also f**k The Mets.
Mariners won game 1 6-0. You know what that means, right? Just 2 more runs the rest of the series. Use them wisely.
Mariners crsushed the Mets in front of the whole country (first sunday night game from Seattle in 20 years) and swept the series. Julio is back from the IL, everybody is getting hot at the right time, the pitching remains as good as ever...it's time to make a run at this thing. Mariners have won 4 in a row. Astros have won 5 in a row. It will be very tough...
George Kirby's Cy Young chances have gone up in smokes after allowing 7 runs to the Tigers in 3 innings, although TO BE FAIR...at least 5 of those should be unearned ones. Defense has been atrocious today. Official scorers suck.
Make that 11 runs in 4 innings. First game on a 9-day road trip so to not burn the bullpen, Scott left him out there to die. It happens, I guess. The best thing about baseball is that you get to try again after the next day.
Mariners have been swept by the Tigers. Game one was lost 15-1. Games 2 and 3 were blown at the end. Just when I thought we were getting hot at the right time. So right now we're on "it's over" mode again...might change in a few days...again.
Mariners have lost their 5th in a row to the Pirates who were in the middle of a 10-game losing streak. Now 3 games behind the Astros in the West and further back in the wild card. The media is starting to question Servais future as a manager. They have tried everything. Fired the hitting coach, brought two bats in the deadline, had a players only meeting, changed routines. Nothing works. This team scores 11 runs one game, then those same 11 in the next 10 games. They're the worst hitting team in baseball and it's not even close. And now the pitching is starting to fall apart. It is officially 99.99% over.
Nothing like facing a top team on the road in the middle of your worst stretch of the season. Yet another quality start wasted by the Mariners who managed to get only 2 hits in a 3-0 loss at Dodger Stadium. We have now lost 6 of the last 7. The one win was by 12 runs, though...so that's nice, I guess...
Lots of chatter on social media about the Mariners firing manager Scott Servais after tonight's game, no matter the outcome. I don't agree with the move, there's only so much managers can do, but I agree that you have to do something...the collapse has been horrible.
After being swept by the Dodgers, Mariners lost 9 of the last 10 and trail the Astros by 5 games in a division they led by 10 just 2 months ago. At least football is starting soon...
UPDATE: Ken Rosenthal from The Athletic reports the Mariners will fire Scott Servais today and replace him with legendary catcher (for the M's at least) Dan Wilson. Managers can't win baseball games...but they sure can lose them. Scott made some baffling bullpen choices lately and pinch hitting too which I'm sure cost us a few games lately. He seemed to be out of ideas. I'll always be grateful for the manager that ended the drought. Scott, thank you for your Servais (salutes).
In the first game under new manager Dan Wilson, the Mariners came back from a 5-run deficit to win in extra-innings. So at least they're still playing hard. Ended up winning the series. Now we get Tampa at home while the Astros face Dawk's Phillies. Good opportunity to make up some ground...
Won the series against Tampa and made some ground to Houston who lost their series. Thanks Phillies. Now a day off before a 10-game road trip against the Angels, A's and Cards. It's now or never.
Since I said the Mariners should sweep the Angels in a 4-game series, they have gone 1-9 against them. I blame myself for this one. sorry, guys. My bad. After another waste of a series now we open another one in Oakland and must be literally perfect the rest of the way. 5 games behind Houston, 6 games behind the third wild card. It's over but it isn't yet.
