Some team observers assumed wide receiver Armanti Edwards was on the way out of Carolina when the team drafted Joe Adams — who is expected to handle the slot receiver/return-specialist role Edwards has struggled to fill for the past two seasons — in April. Edwards, a converted college quarterback, has not seen much time at receiver — he does not have a catch in 19 NFL games — and he averaged only 5.5 yards on 32 punt returns last season. He is signed through the 2013 season at a relatively low price (he’s reportedly due base salaries of $490,000 in ’12 and $575,000 in ’13), but he appears very expendable and is facing an uphill battle to break through.
