On a subject where everyone has an opinion, Tony Dungy gave a definitive answer to the Peyton Manning season opening game debate on Sunday night. Appearing as an analyst on NBC's "Sunday Night Football" halftime coverage Sunday night, Dungy said that he believes the quarterback will start against the Houston Texans during the Colts' first regular season game despite complications from May neck surgery. "Unless he's dead, he'll be up under center for the opening game," said Dungy, when posed the question by fellow analyst Peter King. Dungy pointed to Manning's desire to continue his NFL consecutive games streak-which stands at 208-as his reason to believing that the four-time MVP will indeed continue that in a few weeks. "Not only does he want to start every game, he wants to play every play," said Dungy of Manning, who was his coach from 2002-2008. "It was tough getting him out when we were three touchdowns up in the fourth quarter." The debate over Manning's status for the Texans game has heated up this weekend, when owner Jim Irsay said on his Twitter account that the team may have to make due without him in week one. On Saturday afternoon, Manning said that he would for sure be out for the preseason for sure but didn't know about playing in the opener. Source: Fox59.com
The last quarterback to start for the Colts other than Manning was Jim Harbaugh in 1997...... Harbaugh then signed with the Chargers in 1998 to backup Ryan Leaf.......
