Malcolm Kelly: Sleeper Alert!
Coach Jim Zorn has announced that Malcolm Kelly will be the starting flanker for the Redskins to start the '09 season. Kelly now has a chance to put up some respectable numbers in the west-coast passing attack, under head-coach Jim Zorn's offense Kelly will be relied on to work the red-zone and give Jason Campbell a big-bodied target to move the chains.
Last year Antwan Randle-El occupied the position and posted a respectable 53 balls for almost 600 yards and 4 TD's, but Randle-El wasn't working the red-zone like Zorn will expect from Kelly, meaning he has allot of value as a WR if he can maintain his health throughout the '09 season. With Devin Thomas now the afterthought and Moss getting older, Kelly will have a major opportunity to become the go-to WR that Washington has been craving.
There is some red-flags to go over though, Kelly ran a 4.7 at the combine and has had multiple knee surgeries over the last couple of years. Owners who have Kelly in their dynasty and summer rosters for depth are starting to reap the rewards of their patience, but we will have to see if he can gain the proper separation needed to be a threat for defenses on the outside.
Make sure you monitor this situation in week 1, because this kid has the talent, we will just see if this kid can make the plays necessary to keep the starting job. If all goes well for Kelly, we could possibly see him out-produce his counterpart Moss and produce some fantasy gold for teams searching the waiver wire. An injury free season could see Kelly post stats close to.... 60 catches 800 yards and 6/7 TD's, which would make him a steal for his draft status in seasonal leagues.
