NFL news you can’t afford to miss before your draft

August 10, 2009 by Kurt Turner

Here is what you missed from Saturday to Sunday that you cant afford to let get by. Fantasy football is all about research and keeping up-to-date with all the happenings. Sometimes press releases slide by we don't catch. I've tried to put together a list of the happenings this weekend that could have impact on players and effect your draft picks. So here we go!

DeAngelo Williams RB Panthers
DeAngelo Williams still hasn't resumed practicing since "tweaking" his toe at the end of last weeks training. We all need to pay attention to this. Toe injuries, as we all know, can really impact the production of football players for an entire season. Every year you hear about some football player "tweaking" his toe then for the rest of the year he'll play in games and his production will be poor. Keep tabs on this and if he still has issues come late August you need to make sure to add Stewart to your RB2 core or maybe even better.

Calvin Johnson WR Lions
Calvin Johnson appeared at the Lions' practice facility in a thumb cast Monday after jamming his fingers during Sunday's workout. So please don't draft him if you're in my league. Let him fall to the 2nd round... please? Seriously though, Megatron is fine! I'm surprised Detroit doesn't drive him around in a steel bubble.

Donnie Avery WR Rams
The foot injury that will sideline Donnie Avery for the next 4-6 weeks is a stress fracture. Avery could miss a regular season game or two and a slow start is all but guaranteed. Bulger now can throw the rock to.. he'll throw to.. the sidelines and Randy McMichael!! But I'll save McMichael for my next sleeper article.

Kellen Winslow has always produced PPR when healthy.

Kellen Winslow TE Buccaneers
The Bucs expect tight ends Kellen Winslow and Jerramy Stevens to play a big role in the passing game. According to the St. Petersburg Times, the BUCS GM Mark Dominik stated "We felt like what we wanted to do at tight end could cross over to the receiver position,".. "There's kind of a mesh of the two, and we think Kellen and Jerramy (Stevens) will play a big role in the passing game." translation: The Bucs will use Winslow as their No. 2 option lining him up in the slot from time to time. PPR Drafters need to take note of this information.
Chris Henry WR Bengals
I've already hyped Chris Henry up as a sleeper for your 2009 fantasy football draft. But training camp reports are going to make it harder and harder for you to get him as cheaply as we would like. In camp the Bengal are giving Henry plenty of red zone looks. Henry isn't a PPR dream come true but for you touchdown only leagues Henry is going to be money in the bank.

Titans versus Bills Preseason opener
During the Titans' preseason opener Sunday White got consecutive red-zone carries bringing home the bacon on his second try from three yards out. LenDale looks to continue to vulture touchdowns from Chris Johnson. Fred Jackson rushed three times for just three yards after Marshawn Lynch danced for seven yards. Buffalo's offensive line was manhandled and unable to open holds. Watch this close before placing to high of value on Edwards, Owens and the running back core.

Knowshon Moreno RB Broncos
Knowshon Moreno is already playing with the starting offense during his first in-camp practice with the Broncos Sunday. Josh McDaniels also confirmed that Moreno will play in Denver's August 14 exhibition opener. Moreno should pass all the backs on the chart right now. I'm so glad Mike Shanahan is gone! Maybe now we can count on some consistency out of the RB position in Denver.

Kevin Jones RB Bears
According to beat writer Brad Biggs, RB Kevin Jones has been one of the gems of camp so far. That’s right Jones keep the defenses tired while Forte takes a break on the bench.

Greg Olsen TE Bears

According to the Chicago Sun Times Bears GM Jerry Angelo reportedly believes that Greg Olsen is "ready to explode" in his third season. Olsen is the primary read on most plays Chicago has run in camp and has exhibited "tremendous body control" in practice. Is anyone out there still doubting Olsen as the TOP TE FOR 2009?

First round value at a second round price!

Pierre Thomas RB Saints

The Saints have experimented with using Pierre Thomas at quarterback in the Wildcat formation during training camp. While this might only get you an extra touchdown out of Thomas this clearly indicates that PT Cruiser is going to take a leap this year. Thomas should be on your draft cheat sheet. Thomas’s ADP is currently #29 which is great for guys like us that know his true value. I can only hope to find him this late in my draft.
Willie Parker RB Steelers
Steelers RB Willie Parker sat out practice Saturday with back spasms, and while most reports are saying this isn't a "major deal" you need to take note that Willie only played 11 games last season thanks to injuries. And back issues like spasms don't just get better or go away. Keep an eye on this and I've already lowered Parker on my draft sheet. Back issues are not good for fantasy football.

Chad Ochocinco WR Bengals
Chad Ochocinco was the standout player of Saturday's mock game.. In PPR leagues Chad has excellent value. His current ADP is 40.

Percy Harvin WR Vikings
Rookie Percy Harvin "just keeps making highlight plays" in Vikings camp. If anything this adds even more value to AP. Harvin's ADP of 105 is to high for me especially since the QB situation is just horrible in Minnesota.

LaDainian Tomlinson RB Chargers
LaDainian Tomlinson says he wants to play in the preseason this year. I guess LT wants to show the world what he has remaining in those legs or perhaps he wants to get warmed up for the regular season. Either way I like this news, I like this a lot. Where do you hold LT in your cheat sheets? His current ADP is #7 is this to high or to low?
