In his Monday press conference, San Francisco head coach Mike Singletary told the media that Shaun Hill will be replaced by former top overall draft pick Alex Smith for this week's game at Indianapolis.
Smith had a strong second half against the Texans, throwing for 206 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. The Niners were down 21-0 entering the second half, and rallied to lose 24-21. Hill completed only six of 11 attempts for 45 yards Sunday.
This decision has to raise the stock of tight end Vernon Davis, who has played well this year with Hill under center but caught all three of Smith's touchdown passes Sunday. Michael Crabtree played well in his first action for San Francisco, catching five balls for 56 yards as well.
Considering how prolific Peyton Manning has been this year, and the vulnerability of the Niners defense lately, Smith might be a worthy waiver wire addition moving forward.
