Ryan Tannehill’s Leash Isn’t Needed In February

February 9, 2014 by Christopher Olmstead

Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill and head coach Joe Philbin are bother entering their third season with the team. This third season could very likely be 'make or break' for the both of them. During their previous two seasons together they have amassed a record of 15-17. Philbin is very aware of the fact that his stay in Miami may directly correlate to how Tannehill plays this season. As a result of this Philbin has already come out and said the Tannehill will be on a shorter leash in 2014.

According to a recent article on ESPN.com sources close to Philbin had the following to say;

"He definitely wants to push Tannehill more," said one source who has spoken to Philbin about the quarterbacks, "and if he doesn't see improvement he said he might go to Moore at some point. He definitely has a lot of faith in Moore, and they're paying him a lot of money."

Is Ryan Tannehill the answer in Miami?

I am not sure but he has shown flashes that he might be. I for one am all for quarterback competition and competition as a whole. Competition pushes people to strive for more and in most cases it produces a better product. That being said there is absolutely no need to be discussing this in the month of February or at least making it public information.

If you want Tannehill to know that he is on a shorter leash in 2014 then tell him. You can do this by having a conversation or you can do this by bringing in another quarterback via the draft or free agency. Heck, if you really wanted to then you could do both. It just seems foolish and counterproductive to be having this conversation in February.

Unless there is an injury, it’s a foregone conclusion that Tannehill will be the starting quarterback come September. Unless there is a miracle, it will take a playoff berth to most likely save the job of Philbin and possibly Tannehill. With this much on the line shouldn’t you at least want the fans to think that you 100 percent support your guy?

Some days it’s tough being a Dolphin fan.
